Joe Lindsay's Record Label Guide for Domestic LPs

The Record Label Guide for Domestic LPs

First published in 1986, this is perhaps the only work of its kind — at least when it comes to identifying first pressings of US albums. Available now is a 2005 reprinting of Joe Lindsay's monumental effort.

This 200-page volume contains the images, technical data, and historical information for over 275 of the major (and some small) labels producing vinyl albums. The period covered is from the early 1950s to 1986, the year of first publication.

Also contains:

1. The Life and Untimely Death of Quadraphonic Sound - by Gene Arnspiger.
This article provides a brief explanation of what quadraphonic sound was, how it came about, how it worked, and why Quad failed.

2. The Delta Method for Disc-Dating.
This two-page feature tells you when a disc was made by the Monarch Record Manufacturing, merely by looking at the number found in the vinyl trail-off area (dead wax), found just outside the paper label.

3. Vital information on Promotional issues, Label logos vs. Jacket logos, LP labels vs. 45rpm Labels, oddities, specialty, and custom labels.

All record labels are pictured in black-and-white, a sample page of which is shown below:

Here are some of the 275 labels documented:
